I brought it on myself. It's my fault I asked for it Shot myself in the foot Put my foot in my own mouth I made my own bed I reap what I sow I take full responsibility I bought it, now I gotta own up to it You pay your money you take your chances Ok, enough with the metaphors I said I am pulling away from CB stuff, especially cough cough CB amps. I also had just gave up on another CB amp, the Widowmaker errr I mean Footwarmer amp and if I didn't say it in public, at the least I told myself never again (on a widowmaker). With all that said, guess what popped up in one of my longtime Ebay searches? I have been playing and searching on Ebay pretty much when they started. It is the primary source of not all, but most of my collection. I put in search words under the CB and Amateur radio categories like Browning, Tram, Squires Sanders, Astatic Eagle, "Rare" CB, Pride, and Palomar. So, a few weeks ago, a Palomar Skipper 300 popped up in my search. As with most things Ebay nowadays, it was not a bid auction but had a 'Buy-It-Now' price. TBH, the buy-it-now price was $299.99 plus shipping. No other option, no make offer. Besides, even if it had a make offer, I'll just use another metaphor, you snooze - you lose. You know that if you see something you want and you don't pull the trigger, you will often FAFO errr I mean screw around and lose out. So, $300 is more than I wanted to pay, but who always gets what they want for what they want to pay? Plus, as said, I just gave up on the Footwarmer, so why in the world would I buy this? Especially for $300? IDK. They are very popular if I want to sell it, plus, especially this four 6146W tube amp, it's another modulating monster when properly working. I have had a few in the past, they work great, but as with a lot of things I have had, I sold them. Part of me regrets not keeping one for the collection, but another part of me is like, there are better amps, such as the recent Clegg Apollo 6 which will take high Yellow Table money for me to let go, so, I really needed this like I need another hole in my head (whoops another metaphor). However, with CB radio, do we really need anything other than 1 good radio and 1 good amp (if we need an amp at all)? However, on the other hand, and as a collector, where's the fun in that? So, though the price wasn't exactly high, but more than I wanted to pay, I went and 'Pulled the trigger' anyway. If I decide to sell it, I could get more than the $350 I got into it. If I keep it, it's a nice piece for the collection and not only looks good, but is a smoking audio machine. The bad part, so far, is that it's been a while since I bought an amp off Ebay and I forgot how bad some of the Ebay sellers are. The seller was new and shipped in a timely fashion. That's good. Actually, before I retired from the 9-5, I had problems with timeliness. However, when it arrived, another too small box was the first sign. When I picked it up, I heard some rattling was the 2nd sign. After opening the box seeing it was packed with wrapping paper, and not much of it at that, was the 3rd sign. Last, after opening the cover and seeing 2 of the tubes laying around with the tube's octal plug keys broken off was the last. Well, I guess 'something is better than nothing' or 'it could have been worse'. Tube keys can hopefully be glued back on, or I have had some with missing keys, and I just marked the spot on the tube where the key would be and would just have to be very careful to plug it into the right pins of the socket. Hence, if that is its 'best shot' then I guess 'I am still ahead of the game' Though this is a Widowmaker, it is not a full blown Widowmaker like the Footwarmer is. The Footwarmer has no transformer at all. No HV or LV transformer. All voltages come direct off the line voltage. This one has no HV transformer and takes the hv off the line voltage using a quintupler, but at least it has a LV transformer that runs the tubes filaments and the LV circuits. Still, a dangerous design, but not quite as dangerous if that makes any sense. With 4 6146 tubes in full tetrode (turbo) mode with that unlimited current quintupler HV setup, this amp really smokes. Hard to beat the audio, so (I couldn't resist). I hope it works. I would hate to have to dig into another one of these Widowmakers. I'll keep the gloves on though. More to come.
