Born out of sisal stems, split cane and voile fabric, a school of five Clanwilliam Sandfish came to life in the Tankwa Karoo at AfrikaBurn 2024! Crafted by local artist Chip Snaddon and his team of creatives, the fish puppets aim to raise awareness about the endangered Clanwilliam Sandfish - a migratory species unique to the Tankwa Karoo and Cederberg Mountains, and an ambassador for healthy, free-flowing rivers in South Africa. The sandfish artworks are also part of the World Fish Migration Day 2024 campaign, which celebrates migratory fish and free-flowing rivers around the world! Saving Sandfish is part of the Freshwater Research Centre’s Fynbos Fish Revival initiative working to save threatened fish species and restore critical river habitat by working with local communities.
