Nyota's Organic Green Garden part of Nyota Center, a center for orphans in Awembo, about 20 minutes from Rongo in Nyanza, Kenya, the decor of a syntropic agroforestry permaculture course facilitated by Caleb Omolo, Steven Otieno, Dee J Essy and Roland van Reenen. This week we did a very special project for an orphanage in Awendo, not far from Rongo in Nyanzi. This orphanage Nyota, has a big organic farm to feed the orphans with the best quality of food and also as source for extra income. The organic farm already contains a foodforest with coffee as cashcrop. Now we were approached by the organization to train 15 of the farm workers and about 15 of the farmers in the community that surrounds the orphanage. The goal is to provide a way of farming that guarantees diverse income-streams. Farmers has become totally dependent on sugarcane production that causes an enormous depletion of the soil, deforestated the area and as a result rainfall became scarce. Also sugarcane can only once in the 2 years being harvest. The organization is very interested in the Regenerative power of syntropic agroforestry, not only for the environment but also to break the poverty farmers are now facing. Syntropic agroforestry produces a continuous harvest stream from the first month till at least 20 years. Besides the cashcrop coffee, we planted a great number of indigenous vegetables, papaya, cassava, bananas, citrus and avocado and at every 3 meter we planted Grevillea robusta as timberwood. Projects like this makes my heart goes boom. And we learned as much from the farmers as they from us. For example to add Mexican sunflower in the banana pit to prevent the feared banana disease. I would like to thank Caleb Omolo for this great opportunity and also co-trainers Dee J Essy, Stephen Otieno and Collins Biko. Gratitude is due to manager Ogveno Stephen for believing in us!
