Prof. Udaya Narayana Singh is a distinguished linguist, cultural thinker, translator, and poet of Maithili, Bangla, and English. In Maithili, he writes under the celebrated pen name Nachiketa. He is currently Chair-Professor and Dean (Faculty of Arts) at Amity University Haryana and has served as Director of CIIL, Mysore, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. As the former Director of Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore, he led major national initiatives in language research, preservation, and policy, and founded the National Translation Mission to strengthen multilingual knowledge in India. With over 250 research papers, numerous books, twelve plays, and seven poetry collections, his scholarship bridges language, culture, and society. He has also created 545 documentaries on Indian languages and literary traditions. Recipient of the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award (2017), he remains one of India’s most influential voices in linguistics and literature.
