Flying Dutchman NSW Championships. Championship dinghy sailing in brutal gusty north-westerly conditions. High-performance two-person racing with everything on the line. It’s the final day of the NSW Flying Dutchman Championships and by the last race we’re tied for 4th on 22 points. Race one was tight — proper old school championship racing (pre-foiling), going head-to-head with a former triple world champion and trying to stay in the fluky pressure across the course. But race 7… the final race of the series… is where it all blows up. We secure the favoured windward end and are leading halfway up the first beat when a savage gust barrels down from the Blue Mountains. Trapped between a 1970s IOR race boat being sailed double-handed and a massive shift from the wrong direction, we’re flipped upside down in seconds. From 1st… to last. Suddenly it’s damage control. Risk-on sailing. Trying to claw back places and save the overall result before we have to tow all the way back to Melbourne with our tails between our legs. This is proper old-school championship dinghy racing when it goes wrong. P.S. The score graphic in the middle of the video got messed up, it got a few of the results wrong.
