Bashment Soca mix is a DJ Chilly mix with all of the Bashment Soca that release for Barbados Crop Over Carnival 2024. Bashment soca is a form of Soca which emerged from Barbados when Barbadian, or Bajan, artists began fusing the upbeat, percussive energy of soca with bass-heavy, staccato rhythms of Dancehall and a distinctive aggressive chanting vocal style delivered in Bajan dialect. Bashment soca features lyrics oriented toward the dancefloor and referring to common Caribbean dance styles such as the suggestive "wuk up" wine. Lyrics are often interactive and instructional in nature, which along with its frequently high tempos and frantic electronic rhythms likens the bashment style to Power Soca, though bashment soca is distinguished by its dancehall-influenced "boom-tik-tik" rhythms, a more typically aggressive vocal style, and variable tempos which can run much slower than those of power soca. Bashment soca's roots lie in the development of a Bajan-flavored dancehall by performers such as Lil Rick, a DJ and key figure in "Bajan dub," or "old dub," known for the versioning of Jamaican dancehall riddims with soca influence and heavily Bajan-accented vocals. Rick's 1996 track "Hard Wine," with its skittering, soca take on a dancehall rhythm and repetitive vocals, is frequently cited as the origin of bashment soca, which would go on to solidify its identity in the 2010s, with other Lil Rick productions such as 2011's "Guh Down" becoming key reference points. It is in this period that bashment soca is supposed to have been given its name by producer DJ Chilly, "bashment" referring to both Jamaican dancehall and to parties across the West Indies. The recognition of bashment soca as a distinct style in Barbados was bolstered by the 2016 addition of the "Bashment Soca Monarch" competition to the official Crop Over festival of Bajan Carnival. As the genre was popularized, it began to receive some backlash for its suggestive lyrics and the youth-oriented party culture surrounding the music, yet its popularity has continued to grow, with the sound being spread beyond Barbados to Trinidad by artists such as Jus Now, and embraced in the wider West Indies. In 2004, The well known Bajan group that goes by the name of The Fraud Squad, was actually responsible for given the official name to the genre of Bashment Soca. Fraud Squad Release there song 'Tight Tight" and created history by saying the words 'Bashment Soca' to the top of there track as an intro, birthing the name of the new genre Bashment Soca. #socavibes #barbados #dance #socamix #lifeisbutadream #dj
