In 1940 construction of the Auschwitz concentration camp began. Once complete, the complex consisted of three camps. During its operation, approximately 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz making it the largest killing machine of Nazi Germany. On January 27, 1945 the death camp was liberated by the Soviet army. During the summer of 1947, the Polish parliament passed a law deeming Auschwitz as a museum. Since then, over 44 million people have visited the museum from all over the world. Almost 300 licensed guides, also known as educators are specially trained by the International Centre for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust. Their objective is to ensure that the history of Auschwitz and the Holocaust stands the test of time. Why We Work at Auschwitz will be released at 19:00 GMT on Thursday, 27 January to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
