Taking a day trip to Tellico Plains, Tennessee was such a refreshing experience and a perfect way to spend a beautiful late summer day in the mountains. Located at the gateway to the Cherokee National Forest, this charming small town is surrounded by incredible natural beauty and offers plenty of things to do for outdoor lovers, families, and anyone looking for a peaceful getaway. Tellico Plains is known as the starting point of the Cherohala Skyway, a scenic drive that winds through the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, offering breathtaking views, waterfalls, and plenty of spots to stop and take in the scenery. In mid-September, the first signs of fall in Tennessee are beginning to appear, and the leaves are just starting to turn, making the drive even more magical. I started my visit at the Tellico Plains Visitor Center, where I picked up maps, learned about the history of the area, and got great tips for my adventure. The staff there was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, giving me recommendations for where to stop along the Cherohala Skyway and which waterfalls in the Cherokee National Forest were worth seeing. After that, I headed to the Amish Farmer’s Market, which was a real treat. It’s a unique spot where you can find homemade jams, fresh baked goods, handmade crafts, and locally grown produce. Visiting the market felt like stepping back in time and gave me a deeper appreciation for the rich culture and community of Tellico Plains. No trip to Tellico Plains is complete without a stop at Tellico Grains Bakery, a popular local bakery in the heart of downtown. This cozy spot is known for its delicious pastries, breads, and sandwiches, and I couldn’t resist grabbing a fresh pastry before continuing my journey. Downtown Tellico Plains is small but charming, with local shops and restaurants that make it a great place to walk around. From there, I began my drive on the Cherohala Skyway, one of the most beautiful scenic drives in Tennessee. This winding road stretches for 43 miles and climbs to elevations over 5,000 feet, giving you sweeping views of the mountains and valleys below. Along the way, there are plenty of overlooks and pull-offs. The skyway is especially popular in the fall when the leaves change into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, but even in September, you can already see hints of color beginning to appear. One of the highlights of my day was stopping at Bald River Falls, one of the most stunning and easily accessible waterfalls in the Cherokee National Forest. What makes this waterfall unique is that you can see it right from the road. The powerful cascade tumbles down 90 feet into a rocky pool below, and it’s truly a breathtaking sight. It’s also a great spot for photos and a must-see stop for anyone driving the Cherohala Skyway. Just a little further up the road is Baby Falls, a smaller but equally beautiful waterfall where you can often see kayakers navigating the rapids below. These waterfalls are perfect places to stop, stretch your legs, and connect with nature. The entire drive on the Cherohala Skyway was peaceful and scenic, with every curve revealing another incredible view of the Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest. The road is well-maintained and not overly crowded, which makes it ideal for a relaxing drive or motorcycle ride. I found myself stopping multiple times just to take in the scenery and appreciate the quiet beauty of this area. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and really enjoy the moment. Tellico Plains truly has something for everyone. Whether you love hiking, photography, waterfalls, or just taking a slow, scenic drive, this area is full of opportunities to explore. I feel grateful for the chance to experience such a beautiful part of Tennessee. Tellico Plains is a place where you can truly unwind and experience the charm of a small mountain town. Whether you’re coming for the waterfalls, the scenic drives, or the local culture, this area is a hidden gem that deserves to be on your travel list. I know I’ll be back again, especially later in the fall when the colors are at their peak and the Cherohala Skyway is at its most spectacular. Tellico Plains and the surrounding Cherokee National Forest are perfect for a quick weekend getaway or even just a day trip. From visiting the Tellico Plains Visitor Center, strolling through the Amish Farmer’s Market, grabbing a pastry at Tellico Grains Bakery, to chasing waterfalls like Bald River Falls and Baby Falls, there’s so much to see and do.
