A Home Stolen by War: Ukrainian IDPs and Their Search for Belonging

Seminar in Ukrainian Studies A Home Stolen by War: Ukrainian IDPs and Their Search for Belonging Viktoriya Sereda, HURI MAPA Project Research Fellow, Ukrainian Research Institute, Harvard; Associate Professor of Sociology, Ukrainian Catholic University The annexation of the Crimea by the Russian Federation in March 2014 and the ongoing military conflict over the Donbas region resulted in the continuous mass relocation of various groups of affected Ukrainian population. In 2015, Ukraine found itself among the five countries in the world with the highest number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) associated with conflict and violence, and it continues to rank highest in Europe. This process resulted in wide social, political, and cultural implications for the country, challenging the preexisting sense of belonging, national identification, and citizenship allegiances. Sereda aims to analyze how various groups of internally displaced persons (IDPs) dealt with the processes of resocialization and their positioning within the receiving communities, examining what are the main lines of inclusion and exclusion along which they narrate their belonging. The study is based on both national survey data from 2017, and more than two hundred in-depth interviews conducted since 2014 with people relocated from Crimea and Donbas. Viktoriya Sereda is an associate professor of sociology at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. Her research focuses on urban sociology, memory studies, nationalism, and identity studies. In 20017/2018 she was a fellow of Wissenschaftskollege zu Berlin. Since 2016 she works on the “MAPA: Digital Atlas of Ukraine” project at the Ukrainian Research Institute, Harvard University. Recent research projects include "Region, nation, and beyond. An Interdisciplinary and transcultural reconceptualization of Ukraine," “Displaced cultural spaces: current Ukrainian refugees,” “Present Ukrainian refugees: main reasons, strategies of resettlement, difficulties of adaptation,” and “Ukraine’s Hidden tragedy”. She is an author of a number of articles published in Ukrainian, Austrian, French, German, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, and Swiss academic journals.
