My first long distance fly-out with the Mosstrooper Minisport SD1. This was in the way of an experiment...when I first became interested in this aircraft type, the owner of one that I was negotiating to buy told me that there was little or no room for touring gear. I suggested that, at least, he could take the seat cushion out and use a sleeping bag instead, which seemed to be a novel thought for him. A week later he decided not to sell - at least for a week or three - so maybe I'd changed his mind. The trip I made wasn't particularly long or adventurous but it did demonstrate what the aircraft is capable of. The manufacturer's fuel burn figures are probably accurate if I were to fly at the recommended cruise RPM, but I decided to fly at a speed that was comfortable and economical, given that I wasn't in any rush. I was very - and pleasantly - surprised at the fuel burn I achieved. Given the wind on the day, I could have made it to France on the fuel in the tank when I left Eshott. Anyway, a fun weekend with a few unexpected challenges and a vindication of "traditional" flight planning. The pre-flight study allowed me to make an accurate assessment of the options when the weather forecast didn't hold up, and that's always satisfying. Production of the video gave me the opportunity to experiment with some new techniques. Well, new to me, anyway. You'll see the attempts at animation, chroma-key and timelapse...well, things can only get better. I recall someone else saying that, on TV. The bastard was wrong. I hope you enjoy the ride.
