Al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Nasa’i, Ahmed b. Hanbal and others reported that Umm Salamah and Umm Habibah once described a church they saw in Abyssinia that contained iconography to the Prophet. The Messenger of Allah then said: “If a pious man from among them died, they’d build a place of worship over his grave, and they would place those icons inside it. They are the worst of creation in the Eyes of Allah on the Day of Judgement.” As described by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on numerous occasions, the downfall of many past nations into shirk was initially due to an extreme love and reverence those nations had towards certain individuals/figures. This extreme love (ghuluww) eventually led them to ascribe certain characteristics and attributes to those beings that are only suitable of Allah سبحانه وتعالى. We can see that the Messenger of Allah addressed this phenomenon early on in the Seerah; thus, Al-Bukhari in his Sahih, Al-Darimi, Ahmed b. Hanbal Ibn Hibban and others reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “Do not lavish me with praise just as the Christians did with the son of Mary, for I am merely a slave. Thus, say: He was the slave of Allah and His Messenger. As apparent, the Prophet ﷺ knew that this extreme love and praise would eventually grow into something much bigger in magnitude. Something much more dangerous. It would eventually lead to ghuluww and shirk Today, we can see that the extreme love of Ahlulbait is the root of several doctrines within Shi’i theology. This extreme love has unfortunately led many Shias into the blunder of shirk. The Shia Imams, who were merely normal humans that descended from the Prophet, were eventually transformed into semi-divine, omniscient and omnipresent beings from the Essence of Allah. The Imams, who almost all died at least 1200 years ago, are often described as being able to answer prayers, provide sustenance, control the cosmos and even aid their supporters in times of distress. This blunder, unfortunately, is regularly sugar-coated and deflected by many Shia apologists today; however, we shall present some of this bitter reality to you today hoping that the Muslim public is not tricked into following something they never signed up for.
