EARLY LIFE AND MARRIAGE Mr. Charles Ndirangu Ndugu was born in the year 1940, in Nkubu, Meru County. He was the first son of the late Archibald Ndugu and the late Leah Muthoni. He was the loving brother of Hellen Wangui Ndugu and Samuel Njora Ndugu and step-brother of Samuel Ndugu, Robert Mwangi, Stephen Gichimu, Elizabeth Wangui, Erastus Kigweru, Beatrice Wanjiku and Duncan Njora. As the firstborn during Kenya’s emergency period, he was often left to look after his younger siblings as his father was detained and his mother had to travel to fend for her family as a trader. Mr. Ndirangu married his friend and the love of his life Irene Njeri Ndirangu in 1977. Their marriage was solemnized in 1999, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Riruta. Together they were blessed with 5 children; the late Moses Ndugu Ndirangu, Sarah Muthoni Ndirangu, Daniel Kanyeki Ndirangu, Nyawira Ndirangu and David Migwi Ndirangu. He was the father in love to Kyle Mueni Ndugu, Wothaya Njeru Kanyeki and Patrick Mwangi. He was the grandfather to Gathoni Macharia, Jaden Mugi Macharia, Njeri Macharia, Brian Macharia, Njeri Kanyeki, Nyambura Kanyeki, Wangui Mwangi, Njeri Mwangi, Angela Migwi, Ndirangu Migwi, Njeri Migwi and Muthoni Migwi, Mr. Charles was a family man. He loved his wife, his children and his grandchildren immensely. He was a real provider, protector and the priest of the home CHURCH LIFE AND EDUCATION Mr. Ndirangu was baptized as a Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) as a child, and to renew his faith, he opted to get baptized again at the SDA Church Laiser Hill, Ongata Rongai in 2021. Mr. Ndirangu went to Mihuti Primary School where he sat for his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE). He attended Kanunga School and Kaheti School for his high school education. He grew up to be a brilliant and industrious man. HIS LIFE’S WORK Charles was the proverbial multiplier of talents, who turned every opportunity to become a thriving business. He started a small hotel in Mihuti while in school. In the 1950s, he moved to Nairobi atop a lorry where he thrived as an entrepreneur. At one point, he set up Multicare Insurance Company. With his late friend Mr. Stephen Thiong’o, they founded Kipande Security Services, later named Apex Security Services Limited, which he ran until his demise. SOCIAL LIFE Mr. Ndirangu was a man of many talents and skills. He was a sportsman, a biker, a swimming instructor at the Aga Khan High School, and a bodybuilder. This led him to be awarded the coveted title of Mr. Kenya in 1969. With this fame, he set up two gyms in Nairobi’s Central Business District and Shauri Moyo where he trained renowned sportsmen such Mickey Regos (bodybuilding) and Reuben Ndolo (boxing). He was the pioneer of wrestling in Kenya and until his demise was the Chairman of the Wrestling Association. He was once a Deputy Chairman of the National Olympic Committee (NOC). Mr. Ndirangu was generous to a fault, kind and loved to give back to society. His commitment to education saw him once being elected as the Chairman for the Milimani Secondary School Board. Mr. Ndirangu loved uniting people, was extremely gifted in the art of diplomacy, cooling frayed tempers with his easy manner of handling things. He always seemed unfazed in the face of chaos. With his every breath, he showed unconditional love, forgiveness and unity. FINAL DAYS Mr. Ndirangu was very strong and lived a healthy life until 2021 when he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He underwent gastric surgery in the year 2022 at The Nairobi Hospital. Thereafter, he went for frequent check-ups at The Aga Khan Hospital. He fought the long illness courageously and even held a Thanksgiving service in January 2023. He kept a positive outlook all through and would speak of his discomfort only if the pain became unbearable. He continued to receive medical attention until he was called to be with the Lord on 10th May 2024 at the age of 84. We thank GOD for the gift of his life.
