In this video we discuss how to rank values or numbers in cells in a worksheet in excel. We go through a detailed example step by step using the RANK.EQ built in function in excel Transcript/notes Let’s say that you want to rank some data values in excel, such as in this example worksheet, where we want to rank the number of gift cards employees sold, which is listed in column D. To do this, we are going to use the RANK.EQ function in column E. Start by left clicking on cell E2, so it is highlighted, and then type in an equals sign. From here we type in ran and a pop up box will appear, in the box, we want to left double click on RANK.EQ. Next we need to tell excel what value we want to rank, which is in cell D2, so left click on D2, and then we need to type in a comma. From here, we need to enter the values we need to rank D2 against, which are the values in column D. So, left click and hold on cell D2, and drag down over the last value, cell D18, and then release the click and hold. Next we type in a closed parenthesis to close off the function and then hit the enter key, and we have our answer of a rank of 7. To make it easier to fill in the rest of the column, column E, we are going to modify the formula we entered into cell E2. To do this, left double click on E2, and then we go into the formula and type in a dollar sign in front of the second D, the 2, the third D and the 18, as you see here on the screen. This creates an absolute reference to the range of cells, D2 through D18. And then we hit enter. Next, we again left click on cell E2, and go to the bottom right corner of the cell and the cursor will turn black. From here we drag down to the last cell, cell E18, and then release the click and hold. And now we have the rank for each of the employees for gift card sales. And this does account for ties, as we have no ranks of 4 or 5, and multiple ranks of 3 and 7.
