(14 Aug 1996) English/Nat A family in New York state has what may be the largest, bounciest 18-month-old ever. Zack Strenkert weighs in at 68 pounds (almost 31 kilogrammes). His parents are concerned because of his sheer size and are desperately looking for answers from the medical community. To say Zack Strenkert is a big baby is an understatement. The 18-month-old toddler weighs in at a hefty, 68 pounds. He's three-feet (91 centimetres) tall and nearly as big around. Fearing their son had a rare disease, his parents took him to a specialist. But so far, there is no evidence of a glandular disorder. His parents aren't convinced though, and are telling his story, in the hope that a medical specialist will see it and can help him. But so far, most of their phone calls have been from the media. SOUNDBITE: "That was our 95th phone call today. It's been quite a busy day. Unfortunately it's been mostly media, not doctors or anybody who can help us with our situation. We're looking for a geneticist if it's at all possible if anybody can help us. It sure would be a relief to find out that there is nothing wrong, or if there is something wrong we can fix it." SUPER CAPTION: Chris Strenkert, Zack's Father Zack has an older brother and sister. Four-year-old sister Summer is much smaller than her younger brother. Laurie Strenkert says being big runs in the family, but she wants to make sure Zack has no medical problems. SOUNDBITE: "You know, I love him the way he is. He's a big teddy bear, you know, but my concern is for his health. I want to make sure that there's nothing inside that's going to disrupt the rest of his life or his quality of life. And, if there is something I can get a hold of it and stop it now or get it under a manageable system that he can have quality of life." SUPER CAPTION: Laurie Strenkert, Zack's Mother Tests for thyroid problems, diabetes and other disorders were all negative. The diagnosis: morbid obesity. His doctor recommended a diet. Zack is so large his ankles won't fit into most shoes, so he goes barefoot or wears moccasins that barely fit his feet. On hot days he wears nothing but an adult diaper. As for his eating habits, his mother says they are normal. SOUNDBITE: "He does not take in that much food, and with his bottles it's mostly water. So, where is this coming from? It's got to be coming from somewhere. And, since the endocrine comes back completely fine there's got to be something genetic making this child grow. You know, there has to be. If there isn't I'm happy as can be, but I want to make sure that there isn't." SUPER CAPTION: Laurie Strenkert, Zack's Mother Zack's seven-year-old brother Andrew is also large for his age. He weighs 121 pounds (about 60 kilogrammes), twice the normal weight. Zack's weight gain has slowed in recent months. He's become more active and recently started walking. Doctors hope he will grow into his weight as he gets taller.
