What’s up? Western World and Politics After Liberalism - Philip Pilkington

In the centuries of the modern era, each generation has faced its own crisis to resolve. Our generation, however, has experienced several: the prolonged crisis and collapse of socialism, the breakdown of the global free-market idea in 2008 – further intensified by the sanctions policy since 2022 – and finally the crisis of the Pax Americana and what has been called liberal democracy’s oligarchic order. The Pax Americana was associated with the triumph of liberal politics and institutions. Today, many conclude that its dissolution marks not only the end of the unipolar world but also the decline of the liberal West. At the same time, it remains an open question whether the decline of liberalism necessarily entails the decline of the West itself, given its rich intellectual and institutional heritage and its historical capacity for adaptation. Hungary lies on the frontier of the West and is therefore particularly sensitive to these transformations; the reckoning with liberal illusions began here, on the borderland. The aim of the conference was to understand our current demographic, economic and intellectual condition, to assess our resources and reserves, and to consider how we might respond to the demographic, economic, military and cultural crisis facing the West. A modern kor évszázadaiban minden nemzedéknek megvolt a maga megoldandó válsága, a mi nemzedékünk azonban többet is megélhetett: a szocializmus elhúzódó válságát és összeomlását, a globális szabadpiac eszméjének 2008-as megrendülését – amit a 2022 óta tartó szankciós politika csak fokozott –, valamint a Pax Americana és a liberális demokráciának nevezett oligarchikus uralom válságát. A Pax Americanát a liberális politika és intézmények győzelmével kapcsolták össze, ma azonban sokan úgy látják, felbomlása nem csupán az unipoláris világ végét, hanem a liberális Nyugat hanyatlását is jelenti. Ugyanakkor kérdéses, hogy a liberalizmus hanyatlása szükségszerűen a Nyugat hanyatlása is-e, hiszen annak szellemi és intézményes múltja gazdag, és korábban is képes volt alkalmazkodni. Magyarország a Nyugat határán fekszik, így különösen érzékeny e változásokra; a liberális illúziókkal való számvetés itt, a határvidéken kezdődött. A konferencia célja az volt, hogy megértsük jelenlegi demográfiai, gazdasági és szellemi helyzetünket, feltárjuk forrásainkat és tartalékainkat, és választ adjunk arra, miként birkózhatunk meg a Nyugat demográfiai, gazdasági, katonai és kulturális válságával.
