Fantastic S&DR 200 West Side Story Gala at Kirkby Stephen East: Stainmore Railway with 2MT 78018 and J27. 24 August 25 A day away from Carlisle and a fantastic Bank Holiday afternoon at the Stainmore Railway at Kirkby Stephen East. The Stainmore Railway through Kirkby Stephen East station was originally built by the South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway but soon taken over by the Stockton & Darlington Railway. So a direct connection to Rail 200! Two visiting locos running trains made up of fantastic restored carriages plus an 1871 saloon (remember the 'Old Gentleman's Carriage from the Jenny Agutter Railway Children film?). The standard of restoration at Kirkby Stephen East is exemplary. Although the line is short they were able to run parallel departures as well as alternating runs every quarter hour! A look at the newly rebuilt Stockton & Darlington period signal box, What does bring the story together remembering the former Stockton & Darlington Railway Stainmore line is that well known film from the 50s, Snow Drift at Bleath Gill. Filmed east of Kirkby Stephen and showing 2MT from Kirkby Stephen shed in a snow drift for several days with Plough No. 18 involved in its rescue! The 'old gentleman's saloon', originally built by the Stockton & Darlington Railway, also brings some originality about the event.
