Free from Epic Games February 6th to February 13th 2025 Title: Beyond Blue Summary: Beyond Blue takes players into the near future, where they will have the opportunity to explore the mysteries of our ocean through the eyes of Mirai, a deep-sea explorer and scientist. She and her newly-formed research team will use groundbreaking technologies to see, hear, and interact with the ocean in a more meaningful way than has ever been attempted. The game features an evocative narrative and exploration of an untouched world. Embracing the same inclusive development process that was used to create Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna), E-Line's BAFTA award-winning game about Alaska Native culture, the company partnered with BBC Studios (developers of the acclaimed Blue Planet II), OceanX Media, world-class game makers, and some of science's leading ocean experts to craft an experience that reflects the awesome wonder and unbounded mystery that infuses our planet's beating blue heart. Release Date: Jun 11, 2020 Developer: E-Line Media Publisher: E-Line Media Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, iOS, Switch Genres: Third-Person Adventure -------------- Beyond Blue is more of an interactive documentary, than a conventional video game. It doesn't pose traditional gaming challenges such as timers or dangers, but provides a serene and educational experience. It's a kind of walking-simulator, following a marine biologist, as she studies sea life. The majority of the game is spent swimming slowly around atmospheric maps that are teeming with life. The core gameplay loop involves marking target animals using a sonar buoy, then swimming extended distances to scan them by simply holding a target over them. There's also occasional but limited exploration. Optionally, as you swim, you can also catalogue each animal you see along the way to unlock additional facts about them, with 47 different animals modeled in the game. Between dives, time is spent in a submarine, where you phone family and colleagues to advance the narrative before embarking on the next dive. However, Beyond Blue has a number of issues. While swimming controls work well, operating the drones is finicky. The main story, following a pod of whales facing environmental challenges, is shallow and predictable and delivers its ecological messages in a very heavy-handed manner. Side narratives exploring interpersonal relationships of the main characters feel out of place and fail to deliver a satisfying conclusion while aiming to elicit emotional responses. The constant banter also adds little to the overall experience. The maps, too, are relatively small and offer surprisingly limited exploration given the nature of the game, and the whole game can be experienced in under three hours. Overall, Beyond Blue is a beautiful, relaxing, and educational experience for aspiring marine biologists, but it's gameplay elements can be a tad boring and repetitive. It can still be an enjoyable experience, just don't expect to be challenged in any way.
