Only the snout shines, as it had been polished.” With these words Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish author of the most famous fairy tales described the famous Fontana del Porcellino. Il Porcellino is the nickname for this bronze fountain. Sculpted and cast by Pietro Tacca, following a marble Italian copy of a Hellenistic marble original . The original marble is today in display in the Galeria degli Uffizi. Tradition has it that you had to put a coin inside of its mouth and slide it down hoping that it ends up in the grate. As the coin descends, you had to make a wish! Today the Mercato del Porcellino, or Mercato Nuovo as it is its real name, is home to artisans selling leather goods, mainly aimed at tourists. Being Florence the centre of leather trade for centuries, I was expecting to find products more affordable to the average pocket. In reality what you find here is a high-end market, with expensive, I would say lucrative products.
