The Story of the Madyan People: People of the Prophet Shuaib Who Receive Allah's Punishment The Madyans are one of the groups mentioned in the Qur'an because their behavior deviates from the teachings of Allah SWT. They lived in a region called Madyan, which is now believed to be around the northwestern region of Arabia or southern Jordan. This people were sent by a prophet named Syuaib AS to guide them back to the right path. However, because of their arrogance and tyranny, the Madyan people finally received punishment from Allah SWT as punishment for their disobedience. The Madyan people are a people known as traders and experts in commerce. They live in fertile areas and have many natural resources. However, they are famous for cheating in trading—they often cheat by reducing weights and measures in buying and selling. Apart from that, they are also involved in acts of shirk and worshiping idols. They do not obey God's laws and prefer greed and cunning in their lives. In the Qur'an, Allah SWT says about the call of Prophet Syuaib AS to his people: "And (We have sent) to the people of Madyan their brother, Shuaib. He said: 'O my people, worship Allah, you have no god but Him. And do not reduce the measure and the scale. Verily I see you in good condition (prosperous), and indeed I fear (the punishment) for you on the day of destruction'." (QS. Hud: 84) Even though Prophet Syuaib AS had given advice full of wisdom, only a few of them wanted to believe. The majority of the Madyans rejected this invitation and even mocked and threatened Prophet Syuaib AS.
