Abolish the Police Movement

In our minds, the defund and abolish police movements have been happening for decades, but there’s also a way that they caught on and were articulated that is directly related to the Black Lives Matter Movement. Some people who fight to defund the police are police abolitionists, but not all are, which is why we are choosing to specifically highlight the police abolitionist movement. During the 2020 George Floyd & Breonna Taylor Uprising, abolition of the police went from “fringe” to main stage. Current demands to defund, and especially to abolish, the police are rooted in a long history of visioning and organizing toward abolition of prisons and jails, and the total transformation of our societies. Within the abolitionist movement, folks work towards “non-reformist reforms” in pursuit of police abolition.
