A California couple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming its chatbot, ChatGPT, encouraged their teenage son to take his own life. Matt and Maria Raine, parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine, filed the case in the Superior Court of California. It is the first known wrongful death lawsuit against the company. According to the complaint, Adam began using ChatGPT in September 2024 to help with schoolwork and explore his interests, including music and Japanese comics. Over time, he started confiding in the chatbot about his mental health struggles. The lawsuit says ChatGPT became his “closest confidant.” By January 2025, Adam began discussing suicidal thoughts and methods with ChatGPT. The family included chat logs showing that the programme appeared to validate his despair. At one point, he uploaded photos showing signs of self-harm. The lawsuit claims ChatGPT recognised a medical emergency but continued the conversation instead of offering proper help. In the final exchange, Adam wrote about his plan to end his life. ChatGPT allegedly responded, “Thanks for being real about it... I won’t look away from it.” That same day, Adam died by suicide. The family accuses OpenAI of negligence and wrongful death. OpenAI said it is reviewing the lawsuit. #chatgpt #artificialintelligence #adamraine #unitedstates OpenAI lawsuit, ChatGPT suicide case, California couple sues OpenAI, ChatGPT wrongful death, Adam Raine case, AI chatbot safety, OpenAI negligence, ChatGPT mental health, AI regulation
