Look for the previous videos where she showed how to make the blocks, cut sashings, how to put the sashings around the block, and then how to cut your backing and batting plus basting everything together. Now she is ready to do the quilting. Note there are certain sashings that you are not supposed to quilt to make everything come together correctly. It helps to put a piece of painter's tape on the sashings that should not be quilted so you don't get mixed up. Before Nancy starts quilting, she goes through the tools that have helped her when she does the quilting and appli-quilting on the quilt as you go blocks. She really likes invisible thread on a cone along with a thread holder to hold the bigger sized invisible thread cone. She has a thread holder on her sewing machine but you can also purchase one that sits on the side if you also want to use a invisible thread cone. Or you can just place a spool of invisible thread into your machine. The invisible thread needs to be very very fine. Nancy has found that the Gutermann invisible thread is too thick for this technique. She uses a smaller needle, Micro-Tek 60, in her machine. And she likes the Superior Bottom Line thread since it too is a very fine thread. She uses Lickety Grip on her hands instead of gloves since it helps with moving the block around while sewing on in the machine. An embroidery scissors with a slight curve is great for snipping off extra threads. Nancy shows what different threads look like on the back. She had used a Masterpiece 50 weight thread in the bobbin in one area. She likes the look but thinks the Superior Bottom Line thread is a better look especially for appli-quilting. Before Nancy starts appli-quilting, she stabilizes the block. She sews one line of stitching on the edge of the quilt using invisible thread. Then she continues with the sashings by stitching on the sashing's ledge very close to the edge of the center block. She'll stitch around the edges except for the sashing with the piece of tape on it. She sews with her Pfaff sewing machine which is set up with an open toe applique foot that also is a walking foot. You'll need to use a walking foot on your sewing machine for these steps. Nancy moves to appli-quilting. You'll need to figure out the best stitch you would like to use for appli-quiliting. Nancy's sewing machine has an easy way to do this. You may want to sew some test stitches to see what works best. You want to zig onto the bias strip of your design and then zag off on your background of your block. Lift your presser foot slightly to move around the bias strip as you stitch. Nancy likes the zig zag stitch and not the blind hem stitch because it stitches one stitch on and then one off again. The blind hem stitch zigs on one time and then does three stitches before it zigs on again. Continue until you have sewn all of your design down. If the bias strip crosses under another, stop stitching, reverse stitch one stitch and cut off. Then move to the bias strip that crosses over the top and sewn down the design. Make sure to continue lifting the presser foot as you sew down your design so the top and back don't have puckers. It will take some time to sew down all the design. You'll need to trim off all the extra threads. Nancy likes to work in sections and then trim off the threads in each section so it doesn't get too overwhelming. You don't want to stitch down the extra threads because you won't like the results. Next time Nancy will go over the quilting of the blocks and the quilting of the sashings. She'll use her other sewing machine to do the free motion quilting. Find the free designs on the OnPoint-TV website https://www.onpoint-tv.com/shop/ Thank you for watching! Share with your friends.
