When our mix is finished, we often want to print a stereo bounce of it to send to a mastering engineer, upload it to a streaming service or just to listen to it elsewhere. But what if we're collaborating with someone working in a different DAW (heaven forbid!), someone who wants to remix our track, move its production on or someone who simply doesn't share the same plug-ins? There are all kinds of reasons why we might want to print stems of our projects instead. Stems usually refer to a group of complementary sounds, such as Drums or Basses or Strings. By printing an audio file of each group of sounds in our projects, we're grouping them together to ensure that our collaborator has access to a toolkit of our track's components with the advantage of being able to separate instrument groups out. But sometimes we want to go even deeper, printing every single track as an audio file in its own right, which is sometimes referred to as a tracklay. There are multiple ways to stem and export the component pieces of a track and this week, Jono is taking you on a tour of all of them, exploring the advantages and disadvantages of each. 00:00 Intro - what are stems? 01:37 How the track is organised 02:36 Track playback 03:32 Understanding how FX can make stemming complicated 04:50 Exporting every track 06:05 Exploring Export options 09:05 Export 09:38 Importing the exported audio files 12:03 Creating Track prints from every sound 14:42 Creating Track Stacks for each group of sounds 16:27 When are stems the right choice? 19:20 Understanding Audio Track inputs for re-recording stems 21:19 Test recording of Drums stem 22:49 Creating Audio tracks for the other return tracks 24:25 Summary
