Waiheke Island is the second-largest island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. It is 19.3 km in length from west to east with a coastline of 133.5 km. The island is very hilly with few flat areas, the highest point being Maunganui at 231m. During the 1800s, much of the firewood and building timber supplied to the growing city of Auckland was supplied by Waiheke Island forests; shingle and sand from Owhanake and Hooks Bay were used for concrete manufacturing, up until the 1920s. The island was also home to manganese mines between 1872 and 1900. Whilst now it is generally known as a haven of vineyards and olive groves, the island's western side has a network of cliff-top trails, white sandy beaches and enclaves of native bush. This run traversed the western side of the island. Run with Sue on 4 February 2023.
