While going to the pool or beach is a great way to beat the heat, “The last thing you want is to come up from the beach, wake up from a nice nap, after recovering from that sunshine, only to realize that you are totally scorched with a terrible sunburn. It’s painful, it’s inconvenient, it can actually be pretty dangerous for your health as well,” said Lee Health’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Iahn Gonsenhauser. Dr. Gonsenhauser wants to remind everyone to take action to protect yourself against the sun. “That can mean sunscreen with a high SPF applied liberally to anything that’s going to be exposed to the sun for a long period of time.” That can also mean protective clothing. “Rash guards, long sleeves, hats, sunglasses. Things like that.” It’s also important that you are consistently drinking water when you’re out in the sun. “Heat stroke is very real. Sun stroke and sun poisoning are all things that could happen to you if you were out in the sun for prolonged periods of time without taking these precautions,” said Dr. Gonsenhauser. While sunburns may fade, the damage is forever, so be sure to take simple steps to enjoy our summer sun responsibly.
