4:3 Iraqi Minister of Municipality escapes assassination attempt after blast in southern Baghdad

(25 Sep 2014) Iraq's Minister of Municipality Abdul-Karim Younis al-Ansari escaped unscathed on Thursday after an assassination attempt in southern Baghdad. Al-Ansari was on a visit to the district of Mahmoudiyah, 20 miles (32 kilometres) south of Baghdad when the attack happened. The car bomb exploded minutes after al-Ansari's convoy passed while heading to a government office there. Smoke could be seen rising from the site of the bombing, and debris was strewn across the road. Al-Ansari condemned the attack, saying "the terrorists don't exclude anybody, they targeted citizens and officials alike." Areas around Mahmoudiyah have recently seen violence and battles between militants and security forces.
