Harlequin Flower Beetles are the easiest to keep pet beetle species in the hobby, which is rather wonderful since they are also one of the most attractive species that is native to the United States. Gymnetis thula occur in Texas, Louisiana and Florida and perhaps other Gulf States. The black and yellow coloration and patterning is very attractive and their adorable buzz as they move from flower to flower only accentuates their comparison with bumblebees, and not to mention the similar role they play a pollinators. These day-flying beetles are very prolific egg-layers and their wide and voracious appetite for substrate ingredients during the larval phases makes them an almost fail safe species to work with. They are perhaps the most underappreciated "pet bug" in the hobby, for these reasons. Larvae go through three instars (like all beetles) and develop in 6 to 12 months. Adults then live about 6 months more, on average. That's a pretty good lifespan for a bug and if you get a couple cultures of them going, you can pretty much count on having adults year round. Not everybody wants to keep beetles as pets, and others with a curiosity for the subject might be intimidated by the larval phases.
