Two years ago, on this day, Ahmaud Arbery was gunned down and murdered because he was black. At the time, he was going for a run. And just yesterday, the day before the 2 year memorial of his death, Ahmaud’s murderers were convicted on federal hate crime charges. It is a small measure of justice. And it is by a small coincidence of fate that I was recently able to revisit a route that I ran frequently in 2020. At the peak of the pandemic, my family came here to rural Iowa to stay with family and weather the storm. And it is on these roads that I learned about Ahmaud Arbery. George Floyd. And I struggled with the stories of Sandra Bland and the writings of Ibram X Kendi. These roads were a blessing and a burden for me. I ran my first 100 mile week on these roads. And I realized here, that I have been living a very sheltered life. It’s funny how the mind imprints memories. Like a camera with a too wide lens. It captures everything in frame together, whether you intended to or not. For me, the beauty of these hills are linked with a heavy sadness that I still haven’t figured out what to do with. I never knew Ahmaud Arbery, but he was a runner, just like me. He was my brother. He was me. So whenever I run these hills, I run with Maud. Thanks for watching!
