The trail winds through open space, wetlands and cottonwood-lined paths right in the heart of an urban area, offering a surprising pocket of nature surrounded by city neighborhoods and the nearby Poudre River corridor. Prospect Ponds was originally part of a historic gravel mining operation in the mid-20th century. After mining ceased, the excavated pits filled with water and the area was reclaimed as a natural habitat. Today it’s managed by the City of Fort Collins and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, providing a haven for birds, wildlife and people seeking a calm escape.
