There has been a lot of information on the Internet lately about rain gutter growing systems, so we decided to build a couple of our own to give them a test. We use a 10-foot section of gutter mounted between two pressure treated 2x4 boards. We attached a float valve and connected that to a rain barrel system. Whenever the float valve gets too low, it automatically transfers water from the rain barrel into the gutter. Five gallon buckets are set on top of the frame. Each of the buckets have a 3-inch net pot sticking out of the bottom. This net pot hangs below the bucket and into the gutter. This pulls water up through the soil to the plants with the process of capillary action. 2 inch holes are drilled into the sides of the bucket to produce an air pruning effect. Using this process, when the plant roots grow outward towards the sides of the bucket, they will stop growing when they reach air. This should eliminate root bind.
