With a redesign likely for 2019, the 2017 version of the Passat adds blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alerts and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support to all trims above the base S as well as a forward-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking across the lineup. Most versions of the Passat use a 1.8-liter turbo 4-cylinder that produces 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, which has EPA estimates of 23 mpg city, 34 highway, 27 combined.
