Are you Ready for CMMI 2.0 Jeff Dalton from Ask the CMMI Appraiser talks about the release of the new CMMI version 2.0. On March 31st 2018. History About 15, years ago, the software engineering institute came out with the Capability Maturity Model Integration version 1.0 and it's been through four iterations since that time. The last update to this model is in 2010 when version 1.3 was released. We also saw new constellations being added in 1.3 for CMMI for services, CMMI for acquisition and what used to be just called CMMI then became CMMI DEV. What’s changing now? The new version 2.0 of CMMI is going to be very different. Smaller and more compact Fewer practices Fewer practice areas in each of the “views” “Views” have replaced constellations Change in the language from specific practice and generic practice to just practice Process areas become practice areas Generic practices have been completely eliminated The way that appraisals are conducted has been completely changed Further changes Access the model via an online tool Get rid of your blue heavy book Select different views to look at the model from a DEV perspective, from a services perspective, acquisition, people CMM, and more. Future views may include cyber security, and the ability to pick a view that you yourself created. That's not slated to be released this year or next but it will eventually be coming. Changes to the appraisal method SCAMPI As, Bs and Cs are all going away. They will be replaced by: Benchmarking appraisal Benchmarking appraisal, with a validity period of three years Sustainment appraisal Sustainment appraisal, which gives your organization the ability to extend your validity period by two years by having a smaller appraisal Some are saying the appraisal will be 60% smaller Sustainment appraisal verifies that nothing major has changed and that the process. Organizations may extend the sustainment appraisal for two years, over and over The cost will be much lower Evaluation appraisal Evaluation appraisal, which is similar to how we think of class C or SCAMPI C appraisals today. Evaluation appraisal is a gap analysis The scope is dependent upon your goals and objectives the scope Still more changes A greater focus on governance In CMMI v1.3, there's a hint towards governance but the new version of CMMI version 2.0 has a lot more. There is now a practice area called “governance.” The generic practices have been eliminated, and replaced by two new practice areas: Implementation infrastructure Governance Jeff Dalton is a Certified SCAMPI CMMI Lead Appraiser, CMMI Instructor, Scrum Master, Software Process Improvement Consultant, and author that is a recognized expert in using the Capability Maturity Model Integration and Agile methods to help improve the performance of software development organizations.
