Is High Bias Type II (Chrome, CrO2) cassette tape really worth the extra money versus standard Type I tape? At least for this song, it definitely is. The same recording level was used on both, with no Dolby NR or HX Pro on either recording. The High Bias tape still clipped the S's slightly, but not nearly as bad as the Type I tape. The background hiss (without Dolby) is noticeably less, as well. A manually adjustable bias control and/or Dolby HX Pro would help to greatly reduce the clipped sibilance, but Type I tape -- even with so-called "Extended Range" -- still has an inherently limited high-frequency headroom compared to Type II tape. Even at what would seem to be a perfectly reasonable recording level, without overdriving the meters, you can easily saturate a Type I tape, resulting in a clipped, overmodulated sound.
