Independent Head and Neck Surgeon Dr. Scott Larson uses Lee Health’s high tech Da Vinci SP robot to treat HPV cancers. “The robot allows us to get in there, to get the cancer out while not affecting swallowing, and speech, and breathing, and all that stuff.” These cancers affect the throat. In the past, treating them meant an invasive surgery. “Human hands can’t get in the back of the throat. You would have to make a cut and really open the patient’s mouth and throat up to get back there, which led to long hospital stays,” said Dr. Larson. But with the robot, he’s able to remove the cancer with a minimally invasive approach. “Basically it has an enhanced magnifying lens that goes into the mouth and provides an enhanced view of the throat. It has 2 to 3 surgical arms that come off that are very flexible and very precise and allow you to work around corners and in small spaces,” said Dr. Larson. “The camera on the robot is magnified, it’s enhanced, and it’s a 3-D view. You’re getting a better view then you were just looking through the patient’s mouth with your own eye.” Dr. Larson said using the robot means fewer long-term issues and a shorter recovery time for patients. “Rarely do end up with a feeding tube. Rarely do end up with a tracheostomy. You were in the hospital for just a few days after the surgery, and you’re back to swallowing usually within a week.” The earlier you catch the cancer, the better the prognosis, so be sure to visit your doctor for regular checkups.
