The Don Valley Stadium was constructed from 1989 to host the 1991 World Student Games in Sheffield. It was the first modern purpose-built athletics stadium in the country and the project brought regeneration to the site of an abandoned steelworks in Attercliffe. The artificial bowl was created within the landscape, with the ground level lowered by 6 metres and banked up round the 400 metre track, it aimed to provide ideal conditions for breaking world records. The complex was designed by the Department of Design & Building Services at Sheffield City Council, led by Tom Wood and the grandstand, the event centre piece, was engineered by the acclaimed Anthony Hunt Associates. The facilities were under utilised and relied on regular live music events to turn a profit, but this became unsustainable and the stadium fell into disrepair from neglect. Operating at a financial loss, it finally closed in September 2013 and has since been demolished for redevelopment.
