On this day in 2004, Guillermo Del Toro brought to the screen the beloved comic from Mike Mignola to life with HELLBOY. This was a true passion project years in the making for Del Toro who butted heads with various studios to get his vision on screen but after the success of BLADE 2 gave him the green light he longed waited for and able to secure his star in none other than Ron Perlman. One of the biggest tasks in makeup history to create such a vivid cast of creatures that both honor Mignola’s original artwork and being completely believable, Del Toro insisted some of the greatest artists ever assembled from Rick Baker’s Cinovation headed by Matt Rose & Chad Waters to create Ron Perlman’s makeup, the newly formed Spectral Motion headed up by Mike Elizalde to create Abe Sapien, Sammael, & Ivan the corpse among other effects DDT Efectoes Especiales headed by David Martí & Montse Ribe to create the assassin Kroenen. From prosthetic makeups to creature suits to puppets, this project definitely tested the skills of each shop involved and they delivered some of the most beautiful work ever done within our industry. 20 years since its release, the film has remained a favorite among fans & certainly in my generation is one of the major milestone movies in makeup that inspired so many of us.
