Solo in Egyptian Backstreets (Nearly died) 🇪🇬 Upon arriving in Cairo, Egypt, I ventured out of my accommodation with a sense of excitement and curiosity. As I strolled through the bustling city streets, I was awed by the sheer size and diversity of the metropolis. Despite being overwhelmed by the unfamiliar surroundings, I remained eager to explore and discover all that the city had to offer. During my wanderings, I stumbled upon a shoe shop called "Hitler" which struck me as offensive and shocking, I really don't understand how this was allowed, I wanted to confront the owner, however the show was shut. As I continued my explorations, I hopped into a vintage taxi from the 1980s, which proved to be a unique and memorable experience despite the language barrier between myself and the driver. Eventually, I found myself in a centuries-old market designed for locals, where I was exposed to a wide array of sights and sounds. The market was filled with live animals in cages awaiting slaughter, and stray dogs and cats roamed the streets in packs. Despite the initial shock, I was drawn in by the some-what weird energy from the dilapidated area. As I made my way through the market, I was invited to share tea with some of the locals, who welcomed me with open arms. I had the opportunity to meet and interact with many of the residents, who eagerly shared their traditions and customs with me. I was then taken deeper into the backstreets, where I was treated to an incredible culinary experience. I tried traditional sugar cane straight from the cane, and was able to sample some of the local street food, paid for by the local (He would not accept payment) However, not all of my experiences were positive. While exploring a more central area of Cairo, I was invited into a shop by some seemingly friendly locals. Unfortunately, the situation took a sinister turn when they gave me some extremely hot chillies, causing me to choke and struggle to catch my breath while they laughed. (maybe I brought it on myself, but calling me offensive Arabic names didn't help) I then found myself surrounded by poor locals demanding money, but I remained calm and in my interactions with them, recognizing the complex economic and social issues at play in the region.
