Greg Cahill is Chicago's most important bluegrass musician. As the leader of the band Special Consensus for over 40 years, he is an emissary from Chicago's bluegrass scene to the rest of the world. The list of most influential Special C alumni begins with bluegrass titans Josh Williams & Chris Jones, alt-country hero Robbie Fulks, and jazz mandolin master Don Stiernberg. Though Greg spends most of his time touring and teaching all around the world, he maintains a stable of banjo students at the Old Town School of Folk Music, where I also teach. Fans of Punch Brothers, and of Noam Pikelny in particular, should be aware of Greg, as he was Noam's second banjo teacher (the first was the Old Town School's Mark Dvorak)! Since I moved to town about seven years ago, I've had the pleasure of getting to know Greg at pickin' parties and late-night banjo nerd discussions. I've heard Special Consensus perform a few times, and even had the honor of sitting in with them once. I highly recommend their albums and hearing them live. They play hard-driving bluegrass, their singing is great, and their repertoire is wide-ranging and thoughtfully selected. I am so grateful that Greg took the time from his busy schedule to sit down and play this tune with me! This version of "Cricket on the Hearth" comes to us from Don Stover & Chubby Anthony. Their rendition can be heard on Mike Seeger's compilation album Mountain Music Bluegrass Style. I must give a shoutout to Lisa Holzer, who made me aware of it when she requested I teach this particular version to her daughter Sara.
