The Human-Animal Dichotomy: Integrationism vs The Posthuman Discourse

Sinead Kwok Man Ka (PhD student, The University of Hong Kong) The posthuman discourse is an ever-evolving approach that constitutes a post-dualistic and post-anthropocentric attempt with respect to human-animal relations. One strand of posthuman research advocates transcendence from the human perspective to a species-neutral vantage point overseeing both human and nonhuman animals, thereby reconciling between the two. It will be argued that despite the partial compatibilities between critical posthumanists and integrationists, the latter still depart from the former’s attribution of subjectivity outside an individual’s personal experience and reliance on decontextualized, collective perspectives which constrain individual sign-making creativity as valued by integrationism.
