I got honey. What else did I get? Bananas and oranges. This is my second time here today. Yes. Yes. And it's very convenient” 5. Various of items in the shop 6. SOUNDBITE (English) April Schetler, program coordinator from Virtua Health: “I think many times we think about if you need groceries or if your refrigerator or your pantry is empty, you go to the grocery store, you get in your car. It has gas in it, it has heat. You drive to the grocery store, you go get what you need. You go to the checkout counter and you use your money to pay for those things and you drive home. That's not the case for every resident in the state of New Jersey. There are really hungers in every zip code. But here in Atlantic City, it's even a little bit more challenging. There are transportation barriers. There are access barriers. So you may have to walk to get a bus to the nearest grocery store and then either bring all those bags back on that bus, back to your home, or hire a cab back. And we do learn in other communities that we serve that that cab sometimes can be a $25 cab ride just to get yourself an all your groceries home.” 7. You know, people come here to have fun, they go to the casinos. They do all that. But like, what about us who actually live here and this whole community, you know, I think they really need to do something better for us because we all are struggling back here, You know, like we're just trying our best to live and raise our families and do right. You know, And we just and I just think they got to do better, a lot better with some stuff.” 9. Various of Atlantic City boardwalk STORYLINE: In the seaside resort of Atlantic City, New Jersey, where $5 billion worth of in-person and online gambling gets done each year, there still is not a supermarket. A state agency and two hospital systems are sending mobile grocery stores into poor areas of the city to bring residents access to fresh meat and produce, at below-market rates. Virtua Health's “Eat Well” program aims to bring high quality food and fresh produce to economically deprived areas that lack meaningful access to healthy food. Delorese Butley-Whaley, 62, was delighted to board the bus to buy a half gallon of milk and a loaf of bread for a total of $3. She listed other items that she bought earlier. That saves her 30 to 45 minutes walks to a local corner food store or a $10 cab ride in each direction to a full-fledged supermarket on the mainland. That quickly eats into her food budget. April Schetler, who runs the program for Virtua Health, said it is designed to fill part of the void in communities without a real supermarket like Atlantic City and Camden. It wasn't supposed to be this way in Atlantic City, where in Nov. 2021, Gov. Phil Murphy and top elected officials held a much-ballyhooed ground breaking ceremony for a new ShopRite supermarket that was to be built on vacant land not far from the casinos. The grocery bus “is awesome,” she said. She bought dishwasher detergent, bleach, coffee, lemons, bananas and bread, all for $16.
