Swimbait Review: Bull Shad Shad Glide

Swimbait Review: Bull Shad Shad Glide The latest addition to an iconic line up of proven baits, the Shad Glide by Bull Shad Swimbaits and Mike Bucca is an 8" 3.4 oz 2 PC resin glide bait. The Shad Glide features a pliable rubber tail, rotating hook hangers, and either "OG" paint (seen in vid) or a handful of "HD" custom paint options. The bait is tuned to suspend in the high 70s, and features a weight chamber to add or subtract weight. This vid was shot at about 74 degrees, and the bait ultra slow rises at 100% stock weight, hooks, and rings. The Bull Shad Shad Glide gives a nice wide fluid swim at a slow, steady retrieve speed. This will tighten slightly as more pace is added. The bait will wake with rod tip up, or will straight swim at approximately the depth to which is has splashed down. As opposed to a hard thimping head hunt, this bait is a but smoother, do to relatively tighter joints. This smooths out the corners (I call this the transition) to give it a looping swim vs a hard hunt. The bait passes the stability test with ease, burning as fast as I can reel my Tranx 400. No roll whatsoever, and maintains a perfect upright posture throughout the swim. Adding a pause during the burn will cause the bait to nose down and gain a bit of depth as well. The Bull Shad Shad Glide shows off its gliding abilities as rod or reel bumps are Incorporated by the angler. A slow easy turn of the reel will get the bait out 2 foot or more on each side, again maintaining its stable upright posture. The transition area is looping and the bait turns the corner to begin the next glide. It will also hang out and suspend at the end of each glide before you hit it again if desired. Picking up speed and aggression, firmer faster 1/2 turns will get the bait to shoot hard, adding addition distance and speed to the glide. The bait will absolutely also handle hard reel chops if you are around active and schooling fish. I prefer to use the reel for this technique, but you can also use downward rod twitches to get the bait to glide. Many glides will want to roll when rod bumps are employed, but the Bull Shad Shad Glide seems to accept those with ease. Do keep in mind, rod twitches will want to make the bait turn past 90 degrees and begin to face backwards. This can be great for followers, but you have to pay attention to not foul the hooks. Combining the hard reel turns and firm rod bumps will give you a fast and erratic swim, which will get the bait dancing like crazy. You can certainly add some burn into this as well. I fish around alot of spotted bass, so I will be using this style of retrieve often. However, the bait has a very high level of versatility and excels in many scenarios. The Bull Shad Shad Glide is also very tunable. I have already mentioned the tuning chamber, but one can also remove the pin to seperate the 2 halfs. This allows access to the screw eyes- Mike has the bait set to about the tightest joint configuration allowable, so I wouldnt reccomend screwing the eyes in much more. However, turning the eyes out will begin to give you a tighter sharper cut on the glide, and tighten the swim a hair. Keep in mind, this will also reduce the length of the glide that is achievable. I have one set up for 2 full turns out, and like to use it for more controlled presentations around cover. Keep in mind, always screw both eyes in or out at the same amount. I will link the Vid of Mike explaining how to adjust the bait below... I threw the Shad Glide on a Levianthan XH, paired with a Tranx 400 and 20 lb Izorline XXX copoly. You can certainly downsize a touch to a rod like the Dobyns 806 and a Tranx 300 if you are looking for a lighter and more forgiving setup. Hope you enjoyed this review.
