The KontiMEA research project, funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Energy Sector and supported by Project Management Agency Karlsruhe (PTKA), is developing innovative plant technology at the wbk Institute of Production Science at KIT that redefines material efficiency and scalability for MEA production. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is the heart of fuel cells and electrolysers. Significant increases in production capacity and massive cost reductions are essential for the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy. The new plant concept combines the advantages of the material efficiency of the S2S process (sheet-to-sheet) with the speed of the R2R process (roll-to-roll). This results in the following advantages: Continuous processing: Development of a new process for the continuous and scalable production of MEA assemblies. Waste reduction: Enabling continuous, waste-free processing through innovative cut-and-place modules with precise vacuum gripping and cutting units. Modular flexibility: The modular design of the production line ensures high plant availability and enables demand-driven scaling of production capacity through the parallel connection of multiple units. Suitability for prototyping: Segmented grippers and automatic handling minimize manual process steps, increase reproducibility, and allow for easy conversion to new designs. KontiMEA thus contributes to increasing productivity and cost-effectiveness in industrial MEA assembly.
