Enter a world of organised chaos as artist Mike Hewson presents a tour of his Sydney studio where preparations are underway to transform the Art Gallery’s Nelson Packer Tank into a wildly inventive underground art park. Constructed from thousands of salvaged objects and materials, 'The Key’s Under the Mat' is a spirited act of reclamation and regeneration where a milk-vat becomes a steam room and a steel road plate transforms into a public barbecue. Renowned for award-winning public projects that are at once artworks, play areas, and places to be, Hewson is reimagining the Tank as a combined park, playground, construction site, and commons – an anarchic and generous sculptural neighbourhood where visitors can meet, dwell, play, make, perform, explore and more.
