New game play techniques were introduced, including "fatal blows", available for players to use when their player character health drops too low, and "crushing blows", which can be activated when certain character-specific requirements are met. Also new is a "perfect block" mechanic, which allows for a comeback window after blocking an attack with precise timing. The game features a 25 character roster, including series staples Raiden, Baraka, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Kung Lao and Liu Kang, as well as Skarlet, who returned from the 2011 reboot, and newcomer Geras, who has powers that allow him to control the flow of time and produce sand-based attacks. Also introduced to the series is Kronika who, like Geras, has powers over the flow of time, and she has been altering the tournament's timeline since the series' beginnings. She is slated to be the series' first female boss. Each fighters has their own outfits and weapons, which can be further customized by players.
