The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra performs a string-focussed programme of great Russian composers and contemporary British music, directed by Co-Concertmaster Yuri Zhislin. The concert begins with the world premiere of Libby Croad’s Suite for String Orchestra (2018), made up of three movements. The first – Strati – means ‘layers’ in Italian, and each section of the orchestra enters individually with chirpy, syncopated pizzicato quavers. The second movement, Elegie, is described by the composer as “reflective, sad and sonorous”, with a yearning solo cello line throughout. The final movement, Moto perpetuo, is characterised by a cheerful and driving force throughout. This performance by the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra is the first time Suite for String Orchestra has been performed in full. Following on from Croad’s piece, Zhislin leads the Orchestra as virtuosic viola soloist in his own transcription of Glazunov’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone (1934), consisting of a single movement rooted deeply in the Romantic movement. The programme ends with Tchaikovsky’s serene Serenade for Strings (1880). Despite being written in the same year as the composer’s dramatic 1812 Overture, this piece is entirely different in character. According to Tchaikovsky himself, Serenade for Strings is “a piece from the heart” – he even proclaimed in a letter to his publisher that he was “violently in love” with the work. Filmed by Apple & Biscuit Recordings at the Hellenic Centre in London. This project was made possible using public funding from the Culture Recovery Fund through Arts Council England. #HereForCulture Watch more full concerts from OPO: • Digital Concerts with OPO Follow Us: Facebook: / Instagram: / oxfordphilh. .
