Lennox Castle was a grand 19th-century mansion located near Lennoxtown in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Built in the 1830s by David Hamilton for John Lennox Kincaid, the castle was a striking example of Scottish baronial architecture, surrounded by expansive wooded grounds and parkland. In the 20th century, Lennox Castle took on a very different role. It was converted into a psychiatric hospital in the 1930s, serving as a major mental health institution for the Greater Glasgow area. For decades, it housed thousands of patients, including individuals with learning disabilities, and became emblematic of the era’s often controversial approach to institutional care. The hospital closed in 2002 following widespread changes in mental health care policy. Today, much of Lennox Castle lies in ruins, though the site remains significant for its architectural legacy and its complex social history. Its story reflects both the grandeur of Scotland’s aristocratic past and the evolution of mental health care in the UK.
