After you savior office files on one drive or sharepoint you can work on them with others at the same time it's called co authoring and you can do it right within word excel and powerpoint just select share in the top right corner. Depending on where you save your file you'll either see the share pain or the send link dialogue box in either case just enter the email addresses of the people you'd like to work on your file with or if you have their contact info stored in your address book just enter their names. Include a short message if you want then select After you share file with others you all can edited at the same time no one will get locked out you can even select someone's picture in the upper right corner to jump to where they are and see ...changes as they make them.
