How to Properly Kick in a Door | Breaching Techniques | Tactical Rifleman

Our operators, overseas, find themselves faced with doors in every shape and size. Whether it is a hostage rescue or a hit to snatch an HVT, they need to be able to get through these doors as quickly as possible. Without getting too deep into Standard Operating Procedures (which vary by unit), we must remember the principles of CQB (Surprise/Speed/Violence of Action). Those may dictate that we choose to explosively breach a door (to stun those inside), rather than just mechanically breaching or ballistically breaching. Again, we are not getting that deep into SOPs here today. Is it a “Pull-Door” that opens in towards you? Is it a “Push-Door” that opens into the next room away from you? Is it locked? If so, can you unlock it from your side? Is it reinforced? You answer all these with your eyes as you are moving towards the door. Can you see hinges? Can you see additional dead-bolts or other reinforcement? While some commercial or government buildings do have reinforced interior doors, most residential structures have flimsy interior doors. Think of the doors in your local hospital versus the doors in your own house. Likewise, the doors our operators are facing overseas fall roughly into the same categories. 8 out of 10 can be kicked open, and the rest will need an explosive charge. Yes, some can be breached with a shotgun or ram; but reality is that most of those could have also been kicked in by a barrel chested Marine who is spun up. So, learn how to properly kick in a door. Stay away from the center. Don’t kick the knob. It may take two or three kicks, but most push doors will eventually give. Make sure you are ready, because once it pops, you may find yourself standing in the center of the “Fatal Funnel,” and you are now the Number-1 Man.
