US involved in NATO naval exercise off Bulgaria

(15 Jul 2016) A naval exercise was continuing in Bulgarian territorial waters on Friday. The exercise involved 25 vessels and over 1700 servicemen from NATO members Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the United States. Known as Breeze 2016, the exercise began on Monday and is set to continue until Sunday. It is taking place close to Bourgas, just a few hundred kilometres from the Crimean peninsula. Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov was present as drills began on Friday, along with Bulgarian Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev and Bourgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov. The current training is aimed at preparing the navy for a coalition-led naval operation and improving coordination in crisis response. The NATO drill continues a string of recent visits to the region by the US and its allies - a response to Russia's annexation of Crimea two years ago and its support of separatists in eastern Ukraine Russia maintains a major naval base in Sevastopol, just a few hundred kilometres from the Bulgarian and Romanian coast.
