📖 A piece of history is coming back to life in Smithfield. On North Fourth Street near downtown, restoration of a historic freedmen’s schoolhouse is well underway. ⏳ The story begins in 1869, when the Freedmen’s Bureau, a federal agency, opened the Smithfield schoolhouse for freed Black people. In a letter, Mary Adele Brewer, a teacher there, described the two-room school as 24 feet by 48 feet with 14 windows. Sliding doors, she wrote, separated the two rooms. 🏫 According to the state’s Historic Preservation Office, the Smithfield schoolhouse is the last one standing in North Carolina, and it’s thought to be just one of three remaining in the United States.
